Navigating career goals can sometimes be a bit confusing. I was spinning my wheels for a few years, until I landed a phenomenal mentor. I know sometimes it’s really hard to find a mentor, so I’m going to provide you some career strategy ‘pro-tips’ you can start today, while you continue to seek out a mentor or career advisor.
Tip 1: Clarity – It’s important to get clear on your career goals. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? If it’s too hard to think about what you want, give some thought on what you don’t want and that may help drive to some conclusions.
Tip 2: Get connected – There is a professional organization for just about every career field. Do a quick google search to find some options and attend an interest meeting to determine if its worth the investment of time and annual fees. Also, maximize the career services your university provides as an alumni. You should be able to find information on your schools website. If you are involved with a fraternity or sorority reach out to members to ask questions about various career fields. It could also be helpful to reach out to professionals in your career field to ask for pointers — hint: LinkedIn is a great resource. Note: Please always remember to be courteous – 🙂
Tip 3: Remain consistent – Your career exploration and ultimate career strategy may take some time, in other words it won’t happen over night. It is important to research your career field to determine certifications, practical application and requirements for entry or continued progress. Then develop a plan for next steps and work towards your goals. Also, never too soon to invest in a leadership book (or two) to begin honing your leadership style. Remember leadership resides at every professional level and there is no better time than now to lean into your leadership skills.
